CARBON HUB
CARBON HUB aims to create a detailed, data-driven overview of the CO₂ market in the Øresund region. By mapping CO₂ supply and demand, exploring potential future use cases, and developing innovative business cases, the project supports the transition to a sustainable and circular carbon economy.
Project details
Project description: The Carbon Hub project addresses the critical need for clear and comprehensive insights into CO₂ supply, demand, and utilization opportunities in the Øresund region. With significant maritime traffic, industrial activities, and potential for innovative carbon reuse, the region is ideally positioned to become a leader in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).
Our approach involves mapping current and future CO₂ sources, evaluating transportation and interim storage technologies, and exploring feasible business cases for carbon reutilization, such as e-fuels, bio-products, and industrial applications. The project also considers technical, regulatory, and risk factors associated with CO₂ management.
The Carbon Hub leverages regional strengths including proximity to emitters, robust infrastructure, maritime expertise, and political support, positioning the Øresund region as a pioneering carbon gateway in Europe
Period: October 2023 – April 2024
Project Partners: E.ON, DFDS, Eolus Vind, Copenhagen Malmö Port, ShippingLab, Maritime Research Alliance, EY
Financing: The Danish Maritime Fund
Results and outputs
Comprehensive mapping of CO₂ supply and demand until 2035 in the region
Identified opportunities and synergies for CO₂ utilization, storage, and infrastructure development
Established a framework for future spin-off projects focusing on innovation and commercialization of CCUS solutions
