Øresund Region as a world-leading CCUS Center of Excellence

The Øresund region is uniquely positioned to become a world-leading hub for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). With strong industrial players, advanced research institutions, and strategic infrastructure linking Denmark and Sweden, the region holds significant potential for large-scale CO₂ reduction initiatives. However, despite many individual projects, the full synergy potential remains untapped due to regulatory, financial, and infrastructural barriers.

This project was initiated to address these challenges by strengthening cross-border collaboration, mapping existing CCUS initiatives, and identifying concrete opportunities for scaling up the region’s efforts. Through extensive stakeholder engagement and analysis, the project has developed a roadmap for establishing the Øresund CCUS Center of Excellence, paving the way for a more coordinated and effective approach to CO₂capture, transport, and storage.

Project details

  • Project description: The project identified the Øresund region's significant potential to become a global leader in CCUS through strengthened cross-border collaboration. Despite numerous individual CCUS initiatives, the region's efforts were fragmented. The project, therefore, facilitated comprehensive ecosystem mapping, identification of cross-border synergies, and concrete action planning through inclusive workshops involving over 58 stakeholders from academia, industry, government bodies, and innovative startups.

The project underscored four critical synergy areas essential for regional CCUS development:

    o   Regulatory Alignment

    o   Funding and Risk Sharing

o   Regional Market Mechanisms and Drivers

    o   CCUS Value Chain Development

Each synergy area resulted in detailed action plans, setting a robust foundation for an upcoming main project proposal aiming to establish a CCUS Center of Excellence.

  • Period: September 2024 – March 2025

  • Project partners: CMP and E.ON

  • Financing: Interreg Øresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak

Results and outputs

  • Identification and validation of four strategic CCUS synergy areas

  • Establishment of cross-border stakeholder networks enhancing regional collaboration

  • Comprehensive white paper detailing the Øresund CCUS ecosystem and actionable recommendations

  • Preparation of a structured and collaborative main project proposal to further regional CCUS efforts
